Which Nail Glue Should You Use? + Best Removal Pairings
Share
Not all nail glues are the same, and the one you choose affects both how long your press-ons last and how easy they are to remove. Whether you want a quick weekend set or long-term wear, understanding glue strength and removal methods helps protect your natural nails and keep press-ons reusable.
Regular vs. Extra Hold Glue
Regular Glue
-
Best for short to medium wear (2–5 days)
-
Easier to remove than extra hold
-
Better option if you plan to reuse press-ons
-
Works well with peely base methods
Extra Hold Glue
-
Designed for long wear (7–14+ days)
-
Much stronger bond
-
Ideal for travel, events, or active days
-
Requires longer soak times and patience to remove
The Peely Base Trick
To make any glue more temporary, use a peely base like Holo Taco Peely Base, UNT, or Jello Jello. Apply it only to the center of the nail, then apply glue around the perimeter. This lowers bond strength and makes removal easier without ruining the underside of your press-ons.
Why Warm Water Alone Is Not Enough
Warm water rarely breaks down glue fully, especially when glue is applied evenly or sealed well. Struggling with removal often leads to damage or forced lifting. Instead of acetone, which can ruin press-ons, an oil-based remover like the Nail Release Elixir allows safer, reusable-friendly removal.
Best Removal Method by Glue Type
Regular Glue (No Peely Base)
-
Nail Release Elixir
-
Soak 10–20 minutes
-
Lift gently and reapply if needed
Regular Glue + Peely Base
-
Elixir or oil around edges
-
Lift within 5–10 minutes
-
Fastest and cleanest for reuse
Extra Hold Glue
-
Generous Elixir application
-
Soak 20–40 minutes
-
Lift slowly with a cuticle stick
-
Never force removal
Choosing the Right Glue for Your Wear Time
-
One day: Regular glue with no prep or peely base
-
2–4 days: Regular glue with Elixir removal
-
5–7+ days: Extra hold glue with longer Elixir soak
-
Photoshoots only: Nail tabs
