Which Nail Glue Should You Use? + Best Removal Pairings
Share
Not all nail glues are created equal—and choosing the right one makes a huge difference in how long your press-ons last and how easy they are to remove. Whether you’re going for a weekend mani or long-term wear, here’s what you need to know about glue types, removal methods, and how to protect both your nails and press-ons in the process.
Regular vs. Extra-Hold Glue: What’s the Difference?
Regular Glue:
• Meant for short- to medium-term wear (2–5 days)
• Easier to remove compared to extra-hold, but still needs help
• Ideal if you want to reuse press-ons soon
• Can pair well with peely base methods for even easier removal
Extra-Hold Glue:
• Designed for long-lasting wear (7–14+ days)
• Stronger bond, harder to remove
• Best for vacations, events, or active lifestyles
• Requires longer soak time and more patience during removal
The Peely Base Trick (Bonus Tip)
You can wear any glue more temporarily by using a peely base coat like Holo Taco Peely Base, UNT or Jello Jello. Apply the base only to the center of your nail and glue around the perimeter. This reduces bond strength and makes removal way easier without ruining the underside of your press-ons.
Why Warm Water Isn’t Enough
Even though some glues claim to soak off with warm water, most people find that it’s not enough—especially if glue has been applied evenly or held on tightly. Instead of struggling or turning to acetone (which ruins press-ons), we recommend using our Nail Release Elixir for a faster, reusable-friendly removal.
Best Removal Pairings for Each Glue Type
Regular Glue (No Peely Base):
• Use the Elixir
• Let soak for 10–20 minutes
• Gently lift—do not rip
• Reapply as needed
Regular Glue + Peely Base:
• Elixir or oil around the edges
• Lift gently within 5–10 minutes
• Quickest, cleanest method for reuse
Extra-Hold Glue:
• Generous Elixir application
• Soak 20–40 minutes
• Gently wiggle and lift with cuticle stick
• Reapply as needed—never force it
