How to Remove Press-Ons Without Damage (Even Extra-Hold Glue)

If you love your press-ons, the last thing you want is to damage them during removal. That is exactly why we created Nail Release Elixir, an oil-infused remover designed to gently break down nail glue while protecting both your natural nails and your press-ons.

It even works on extra-strong glues like Olive and June Ultra Strong Hold, as long as you are patient and gentle. Below is how to use it safely, how to care for your press-ons after removal, and how to make your own version at home.

How to Use Nail Release Elixir

  1. Apply generously around the cuticle area and underneath each press-on using a dropper.

  2. Let it soak for 10 to 20 minutes. For extra-strong glue, allow 20 to 40 minutes.

  3. While soaking, gently work a wooden cuticle stick along the edges to help the product slide between your natural nail and the press-on. Reapply elixir as needed.

  4. Once the press-on lifts easily, gently remove it. Never force it.

  5. To remove leftover glue:

    • Wipe it away while it is soft, or

    • Let it dry fully and lightly file with a fine-grit file

  6. Wash your hands and allow press-ons to dry completely before storing.

Important Removal Notes

  • Ultra-strong nail glue requires patience. Rushing removal increases the risk of damage.

  • The longer you soak, the more the glue breaks down and the easier removal becomes.

  • If you are impatient or force removal, damage to the natural nail can occur.

  • Skipping buffing during application makes removal significantly easier and less damaging later.

Caring for Press-Ons After Removal

After soaking, press-ons may feel slick due to the oils. To prep them for reuse:

  • Wash gently with soap and warm water

  • Let them dry completely

  • Lightly file the underside and edges to smooth leftover glue

  • Not all glue needs to be removed, only enough to prevent uneven reapplication

Nail Release Elixir Formulas and When to Use Them

We created two versions of Nail Release Elixir because not all glue strengths should be treated the same.

Non-Acetone Formula

  • Best for regular-strength or lighter hold glue

  • Does not damage the press-on nail

  • Ideal if you want to maximize reuse

  • Requires a bit more soak time

Acetone Formula

  • Best for ultra-strong hold glue

  • Breaks down glue much faster

  • May damage the press-on nail structure or polish

  • Recommended when ease of removal is the priority

Choose the formula based on your glue strength and whether reuse is your main goal.

DIY Nail Release Elixir Recipe (10 ml)

Ingredients

  • 6 ml non-acetone remover or 100 percent acetone

  • 1 ml isopropyl alcohol (91 percent)

  • 1 ml jojoba oil

  • 1 ml almond oil

  • 1 ml fractionated coconut oil

  • 1 drop tea tree oil

Why it works

The remover and alcohol break down glue, while the oils add slip, protect the natural nail, and reduce dryness during removal.

Instructions

Add all ingredients to a 10 ml dropper bottle, shake well before each use, and store in a cool, dry place.

Tips for Reusing Press-Ons

  • Store press-ons in a clean, dry container

  • Avoid acetone if you want to preserve polish and structure

  • Lightly re-file the underside and edges before reapplying

  • Handle gently to get multiple wears from each set

What to Remember

Gentle, patient removal is the key to protecting both your natural nails and your press-ons, especially when using ultra-strong glue. The right formula, enough soak time, and resisting the urge to rush make all the difference.
