How to Create Custom Press-On Nails at Home

Want a press-on set that looks professionally done but is completely your own? You can create custom press-ons at home using Vinyluxe nail stickers, gel polish, and a few essential tools. Whether you love bold 3D designs or prefer clean, minimal looks, this guide walks you through the process step by step.

Let’s build a set you’ll actually want to wear.

What You’ll Need

Supplies

  • Nail tips

  • Nail stands

  • Putty (such as Gorilla Glue Putty)

  • Nail file

  • 100% acetone

  • Small brush for acetone (only use for this step)

  • Small glass dish for acetone

  • Gel polish (color of choice)

  • Gel top coat

  • Vinyluxe nail stickers

  • Optional nail art (charms, glitter, foil, 3D elements)

  • UV or LED lamp (large enough for one full hand, preferably with a covered back)

  • Lint-free wipes

  • 91% Rubbing Alcohol

Step-by-Step: How to Create Your Custom Press-On Set

Step 1: Set Up Your Workspace

Secure each nail tip onto a nail stand using a small amount of putty. Lay out all tools so everything is within reach.

Important: Keep gel polish, top coat, and brushes away from sunlight and LED exposure. Gel can begin curing unintentionally if exposed to light.

Step 2: Etch the Top of the Nail Tips

Lightly dip a small brush into acetone and scrub the top surface of each nail tip. This removes shine and creates grip so gel polish adheres evenly and resists peeling.

Use a brush you do not mind damaging. Acetone will break down the bristles over time, but soaking the brush before use helps soften it.

Step 3: Apply Gel Color

Apply one to two thin coats of gel polish. Cure each layer fully according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Gel does not air dry. Proper curing is essential.

Step 4: Decorate Your Nails

This is where your design comes to life.

  • Apply Vinyluxe nail stickers for clean

  • Add charms, foil, glitter, or 3D elements if desired

Press stickers firmly, especially along edges. For stubborn areas, apply gentle heat using a blow dryer or desk heater. Heat softens the vinyl and helps it mold to curved surfaces.

Step 5: Apply Gel Top Coat

Seal the design with gel top coat.

  • Use a thicker top coat if covering raised or 3D elements

  • Apply multiple thin layers if needed to smooth the surface

  • Cure each layer fully

Keep brushes and bottles out of light between applications.

Step 6: Refine the Shape

Before removing nails from the stands, file the sides and cuticle area to refine the shape and customize the fit.

Step 7: Final Etch (Optional)

For longer wear, lightly etch the underside of each nail with acetone before application. This improves glue adhesion.

If short-term wear is your goal, you can leave the underside smooth.
